Let’s be real, momsh — every time the Meralco bill arrives, my heart skips a beat. 😅 Especially during summer when the aircon runs nonstop and the kids are home 24/7. But over time, I’ve learned a few real, doable ways to lower our monthly electric bill — without living in the dark or turning into a sweaty mess.
If you’re also looking for ways to save (so you can stretch your budget a little further), here are my tried-and-tested tips. Promise, these work!
1. Unplug Everything (Yes, Even Chargers!)
Did you know that even when gadgets are turned off, they still consume electricity if plugged in? Yup — it’s called phantom load. Now, I make it a habit to unplug appliances when not in use.
I even added a cute reminder note near the outlet: “Unplug, para hindi ka ma-shock sa bill!” 😂
2. Do Laundry at Night or Early Morning
Power rates are slightly lower during off-peak hours, usually between 9 PM and 7 AM. That’s when I run the washing machine. Bonus: mas mabilis din matuyo sa morning sun!
3. Clean Your Aircon Filters Regularly
A dirty filter makes your aircon work harder — which means higher electricity use. I clean ours every two weeks, and it really makes a difference.
If your unit is old, consider switching to an inverter type — it’s an investment that pays for itself in savings.
4. Use Natural Light as Much as Possible
During the day, I open curtains and windows to let sunlight in. It brightens up the house and makes the space feel cozier. Plus, it’s 100% free!
5. Keep the Fridge Organized and Closed!
The more you open your fridge (and keep it open while deciding what to eat 😅), the more it works to cool back down. Keep it organized so you know exactly what’s inside and avoid “refrigerator staring sessions.”
6. Switch to LED Bulbs
If you haven’t yet, this is one of the easiest changes you can make. LED lights use up to 75% less energy and last much longer than traditional bulbs.
7. Use a Thermos for Hot Water
Instead of reheating water again and again, I boil once in the morning and store it in a thermos. Super helpful for coffee, cup noodles, or instant soup!
8. Set a Gadget Charging Schedule
We have a small “charging station” in one corner, and everyone charges their phones, tablets, and powerbanks at the same time — during off-peak hours. No more plugging random cords all day!
9. Improve Airflow in Your Home
Better ventilation = less need for aircon or fans. Try rearranging furniture or adding a window screen so fresh air can circulate freely.
10. Use Plants to Cool Down Rooms Naturally
Indoor plants like snake plant or peace lily help cool the air naturally. They also purify the air and make your home look fresher!
11. Track Your Consumption
Download the Meralco Mobile App — it shows you daily usage and helps you understand which appliances are driving your bill up. Knowledge is power, literally! ⚡
12. Teach the Kids About Energy Saving
This one’s my favorite. I made it a family effort — reminding the kids to turn off lights when leaving a room, limit screen time, and unplug their chargers. Turning saving into a “game” actually works.
Saving electricity doesn’t mean living uncomfortably — it’s about being mindful. When you start paying attention to the small things, you’ll see real changes (and smaller bills!).
The best part? Every peso you save on your electric bill can go to something better — like a fun weekend merienda, or a little family treat. 🍦
So momsh, ready to take on the challenge? Let’s make that next Meralco bill a little friendlier! 💪
