Having three beagles means I get triple the love… and sometimes, triple the ticks and fleas! 😅 Lately, I’ve noticed my fur babies scratching more than usual. And sure enough, upon closer inspection—ayun, may mga freeloaders!

If you’re a fellow furmom, you know how frustrating it can be to see your dogs uncomfortable. But don’t worry, momsh — I’ve found a few ways on how to get rid of ticks and fleas in dogs safely, effectively, and without breaking the bank.

1. Vet-Recommended: NexGard Chewables

I started with NexGard — a vet-recommended chewable that kills ticks and fleas within hours. The only problem? My beagles didn’t like the taste. 😅 So I got creative — I hid the tablet inside camote que, which they absolutely love! Problem solved!

What I love about NexGard is that it’s once-a-month protection, so I don’t have to worry daily. It’s on the pricier side, but totally worth it for peace of mind and fewer vet visits.

2. Add Natural Remedies for Extra Protection

While NexGard does the heavy lifting, I also use natural methods for maintenance:

  • Apple cider vinegar rinse: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 3 parts water and use it for a final rinse after their bath.
  • Lemon spray: Boil lemon slices in water, let it cool, then spray on your dog’s fur (avoid the eyes and mouth!).
  • Tick comb: I use this daily for a quick check, especially around their ears, neck, and tummy.

These are gentle, chemical-free ways to keep ticks away — perfect if you have kids who love to cuddle with your pets. 🥰

3. Wash Their Bedding Regularly

Ticks and fleas don’t just live on dogs — they hide in your home, too! I now wash their bedding weekly using hot water and pet-safe detergent. I also vacuum the floors and corners often.

Pro tip: Add a few drops of lavender or eucalyptus essential oil to your cleaning water — ticks hate the smell!

4. Keep the Yard Clean

If you have a garden or outdoor space, that’s usually where ticks start. Trim the grass, remove clutter, and spray the area with pet-safe pest control solutions.

We do a mini-clean-up every weekend. It’s great bonding time with the kids, and it keeps our fur babies safe, too.

Dealing with how to get rid of ticks and fleas in dogs can be stressful, but remember — it’s manageable! With the right mix of vet-approved products and natural care, your dogs will be happy, healthy, and itch-free again in no time.

And don’t forget to check every dog in the house — fleas can easily spread from one to another.

So to my fellow furmoms: keep those tails wagging and those ticks running for cover! 🐾
