Yesterday, a news was released that The Department of Education (DepEd) will start to implement the K+12 basic education program in academic year 2012-2013, starting with the conversion of first year high school to Grade 7.
The K+12 basic education plan consists of kindergarten, six years of elementary education, four years of junior high school (Grade 7 to 10), and two years of senior high school. This is the education plan used in the US and other countries.
What used to be 6 years of elementary and four years of highschool has now been revised to 6 years of elementary and 6 years in highschool. According to DepEd, this new program was designed to provide students with adequate skills needed for college education and employment.
A curriculum had already been created for Grade 7 and teachers will soon be prepared for the additional two levels.
The K+12 basic education plan is expected to fill in the deficiencies and strengthen students’ competencies in core subjects such as English, Math and Science.
Well, if you’re going to ask me, additional year in school means additional knowledge to our children so I’m all for K+12. I also understand that we have to adopt to it sooner or later because we are one of the only two countries left to use the 10-year basic education system but how are you going to address the lack of classrooms, teachers, and school supplies for public schools. Moreso, the parents who are struggling just so they could send their children to school?
The 10-year basic eduction system has worked for us for so many years and produced professionals who are competent enough to work here and abroad.
Perhaps the government should focus more on the college curriculum and those students who cannot afford to go to school.
As for us mommies {and daddies}, all we can do is work and save for our child’s education.
