Feeding a Family Isn’t Cheap Anymore

I don’t know about you, but grocery shopping feels very different these days. There was a time when I could fill a grocery cart and still feel good about the total. Now, every trip seems to come with a little surprise at the checkout counter.
As moms, one of the biggest challenges isn’t just feeding our families ā it’s feeding them well without blowing the budget.
Because let’s be honest. Kids get hungry all the time. Adults get hungry too. And somehow, everybody expects food three times a day. There are days when I feel like all I do is think about what’s for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in between.
The Best Meals Aren’t Always the Most Expensive
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that expensive doesn’t automatically mean better. Some of the meals my family enjoys the most are actually the simplest ones. The dishes we grew up eating. The meals our parents cooked when budgets were tight. The recipes that have been feeding Filipino families for generations.
And honestly? Many of them are still some of the best comfort foods around.

Soup-Based Meals Go a Long Way
Whenever I need to stretch ingredients, I almost always find myself making something with sabaw. There’s a reason dishes like Tinola, Nilagang Baboy, Sopas, and Arroz Caldo remain family favorites.
A little protein can go a long way when combined with broth and vegetables. Plus, soup-based meals have a way of making everyone feel full and satisfied. Especially on rainy days. There’s something comforting about gathering around a warm meal after a long day.
Monggo Deserves More Credit
If there was a budget meal hall of fame, monggo would definitely belong there. It’s affordable, nutritious, and surprisingly filling. Growing up, monggo was one of those dishes that appeared regularly on our table, and now I completely understand why. It’s easy on the budget, packed with nutrients, and can feed several people without much effort. Add malunggay, a little pork, tinapa, or whatever vegetables you have available, and you’ve got a complete meal.

Eggs Have Saved Countless Dinners
Can we take a moment to appreciate eggs? Because honestly, they’ve rescued me from “I don’t know what to cook” situations more times than I can count. There have been days when the refrigerator looked almost empty, but somehow eggs managed to save dinner.
Tortang talong, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, omelets loaded with vegetables ā simple meals that don’t feel like a compromise. Sometimes the simplest dishes are exactly what everyone wants.
Vegetables Help Stretch the Budget
One thing I’ve become more intentional about is adding more vegetables to our meals. Not just because they’re healthy, but because they help stretch ingredients too. A small amount of meat can feed more people when combined with vegetables. And dishes like Ginisang Repolyo, Adobong Sitaw, and Chop Suey can be surprisingly satisfying. It’s one of the easiest ways to make meals more filling without spending significantly more.
Fried Rice is a Mom’s Secret Weapon
I don’t think leftover rice gets enough credit. Whenever we have leftover rice, I immediately start thinking about fried rice the next day. Add eggs, vegetables, bits of leftover chicken, luncheon meat, or whatever happens to be available, and suddenly you have a meal that feels completely different.
It’s practical, budget-friendly, and helps reduce food waste. A win all around.
Home-Cooked Food Still Wins
I know there are days when ordering food feels easier. Trust me, I’ve been there. After a long day, the temptation to tap a few buttons and have food delivered to your doorstep is very real. But whenever I compare the cost of food delivery to a home-cooked meal, the difference is hard to ignore.
And honestly, many of our family’s favorite meals aren’t restaurant meals anyway. They’re the dishes we eat at home around the dinner table.
I think many moms worry about whether they’re doing enough. Whether the meals are healthy enough. Whether the budget is enough. Whether everyone is getting what they need.
But over time, I’ve realized that a good family meal doesn’t have to be expensive. It doesn’t have to be trendy.
It doesn’t have to look Pinterest-perfect. Sometimes it’s just a simple meal shared together after a long day.
And honestly? Those are often the meals people remember most.
Cheap but filling Filipino meals have stood the test of time for a reason. They’re practical, comforting, budget-friendly, and perfect for real family life.
Whether it’s monggo, tinola, tortang talong, sopas, or a simple fried rice meal, these dishes prove that feeding a family well doesn’t always require spending a fortune.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not about how much a meal costs. It’s about gathering around the table with the people you love. š
