How to Find Low-Competition Keywords for Your Blog (Beginner-Friendly Guide)

Why Some Blog Posts Get Thousands of Visitors While Others Don’t

Have you ever spent hours writing what you thought was an amazing blog post… Only to see almost no one read it? I’ve been there. It’s frustrating. You start wondering if your writing isn’t good enough.

But many times, the problem isn’t the writing. It’s the keyword.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a blogger is that even the best article can struggle if nobody is searching for it — or if you’re competing against websites that have been around for decades.

That’s why learning how to find low-competition keywords can completely change the way you create content.

What Is a Low-Competition Keyword?

A low-competition keyword is simply a search term that people are already looking for, but that isn’t dominated by huge websites. Think about it this way. Trying to rank for a keyword like “recipes” is incredibly difficult.

You’re competing with some of the biggest food websites in the world. But something more specific like “easy chicken recipes for busy moms” gives a smaller blog a much better chance.

The more specific your topic becomes, the easier it often is to compete.

Think Like Your Reader

Whenever I plan a new article, I stop thinking like a blogger. Instead, I ask myself: “What would someone actually type into Google?”

Not fancy words. Not industry jargon. Just a simple question. That’s usually where my best article ideas come from.

Long-Tail Keywords Are Your Best Friend

When you’re starting a blog, don’t chase the biggest keywords. Go after the more specific ones.

For example:

Instead of: Budget

Try: How to Budget ₱30,000 Salary for a Family

Instead of: Chicken Recipes

Try: Cheap Chicken Meals for Busy Weeknights

Specific searches often bring readers who already know exactly what they’re looking for. Those readers are also more likely to stay on your page because your article matches their search.

Use Free Keyword Research Tools

You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars every month on SEO software. Some of my favorite ideas come from free tools. Google Autocomplete. People Also Ask. Related Searches. Google Trends.

Even the questions people leave in Facebook groups and Reddit communities can inspire fantastic blog topics.

Pay attention to the questions people ask repeatedly. If one person is asking it, chances are many others are too.

Don’t Ignore Search Intent

This is something I wish I had learned much earlier. Sometimes a keyword has plenty of searches… But your article still won’t rank. Why?

Because it doesn’t match what people are actually looking for. Before writing a post, search your keyword on Google. Look at the articles already ranking.

Ask yourself: “What problem are these articles solving?”

Your goal isn’t to copy them. Your goal is to create something even more helpful.

One Great Keyword Can Lead to Ten More Articles

This is one of my favorite blogging strategies. Let’s say you write about: Meal Planning

That one topic can naturally grow into dozens of related articles. Budget meal planning. Weekly meal plans. Meal prep ideas. Lunch meal planning. Family meal planning. Healthy meal planning. Instead of chasing random topics, build clusters of related content. Google loves websites that cover a subject thoroughly.

One thing blogging has taught me is that finding the right keyword is a little like planting seeds. Not every seed grows at the same speed. Some articles take off quickly. Others need time. The important thing is continuing to plant. Every helpful article is another opportunity for someone to discover your blog.

Learning how to find low-competition keywords isn’t about gaming Google. It’s about understanding what your readers are searching for and creating the best answer you possibly can. Focus on specific topics. Answer real questions. Build content around related ideas.

Do that consistently, and your blog has a much better chance of growing over time. Because successful blogging isn’t about writing the most articles. It’s about writing the right ones.
