Sometimes You Don’t Have to Go Far to Get Away

When people hear the word vacation, they usually picture plane tickets, long road trips, or faraway beaches.
We love those kinds of trips too. But over the years, I’ve realized that some of our happiest family memories weren’t made hundreds of miles from home.
They were made just a short drive away. A weekend in a cozy hotel. A rooftop pool overlooking the city. Late-night conversations while sharing snacks in bed. Slow mornings without alarms. Somehow, those little escapes have become something we all look forward to. And before we even realized it, family staycations had quietly become one of our favorite traditions.
It’s Not About the Destination
One of the things I love most about staycations is that they remind us we don’t always need a grand vacation to reconnect.
Life gets busy. Between work, school, errands, and everything else on our never-ending to-do lists, it’s easy to fall into the same routine every day. A staycation gives us permission to hit pause. Even if it’s just for one night.
The change of scenery — even if it’s just another part of the city — makes everything feel a little different.

We Get to Be Present With Each Other
At home, it’s easy to get distracted. There’s always laundry waiting. Dishes in the sink. Something that needs cleaning. Emails to answer. But during a staycation, all those responsibilities stay behind for a while.
Instead of thinking about chores, we’re thinking about where to eat, whether we should swim again, or who’s winning the card game.
It’s amazing how much more present we become when everyday responsibilities aren’t competing for our attention.
The Little Moments Become the Best Memories
When I look back at our staycations, I don’t always remember the thread count of the hotel sheets or every dish we ordered.
What I remember are the little things. Laughing while squeezing into the elevator together. Watching the sunset from the balcony. The kids excitedly choosing which side of the bed to sleep on.
Walking to a nearby café the next morning. Matching outfits for family photos. Those are the moments that stay with me. They’re simple, but somehow they’re the ones that matter most.

We Discover New Places Close to Home
One unexpected benefit of staycations is seeing familiar places with fresh eyes. We’ve found charming cafés we probably would’ve driven past.
We’ve discovered restaurants that are now family favorites. Sometimes we’ll wake up early just to explore the neighborhood around the hotel, and it feels like we’re tourists in our own city.
It’s a reminder that adventure doesn’t always require a passport. Sometimes it’s waiting just around the corner.
Staycations Feel Less Stressful
Don’t get me wrong—I love traveling. But planning a big trip can sometimes be overwhelming.
Flights. Packing. Itineraries. Luggage. Timelines.
Staycations feel different. They’re slower. More relaxed. If we forget something, home isn’t very far away.
There’s less pressure to “see everything” and more freedom to simply enjoy where we are. And honestly, I think that’s part of the magic.
They’re Easier to Fit Into Family Life
One of the reasons we’ve embraced staycations is because they’re realistic. We don’t always have the time to take a week off. But a weekend? Or even one night away? That’s something we can usually make happen with a little planning.
It gives us something to look forward to without needing months of preparation. Sometimes a short break is exactly what our family needs to recharge.
It’s Never Really About the Hotel
Don’t get me wrong—we appreciate a comfortable room, a nice pool, and a good breakfast buffet.
But when I think about our favorite staycations, I realize the hotel isn’t the main character.
We are. The hotel simply becomes the backdrop for another chapter in our family’s story.
It’s where we laugh over late-night snacks, tease each other during card games, binge-watch a movie we all somehow agree on, or end the day talking about everything and nothing.
Those are the moments that turn into traditions.
As a mom, I sometimes catch myself thinking that family memories have to be expensive or extravagant. But our staycations have taught me otherwise. The kids rarely talk about how fancy the hotel was.
Instead, they remember swimming until sunset. Eating ice cream before dinner. Sleeping in the same room. Taking silly family selfies. Those memories don’t come from spending more.
They come from spending time together. And I think that’s a lesson I’ll always carry with me.
Looking back, I don’t think our family fell in love with staycations because they were convenient. We fell in love with them because they gave us something we often struggle to find in everyday life.
Time. Time to slow down. Time to laugh. Time to talk. Time to simply enjoy being together.
That’s why family staycations have become one of our favorite traditions. Not because we travel far. But because, for a little while, we get to leave the busy world behind and focus on what matters most. And if you ask me, that’s a tradition worth keeping.
